Recipe

19th century

Cookbooks often had recipes for home remedies as well as food recipes. This recipe for black salve was a commonly thought cure for ailments such as warts and even skin cancer. Black salve recipes can vary and are still an easily available and popular product marketed by naturopathic advocates as an alternative cure for skin cancer. Both the FDA and the American Cancer Society warn modern consumers that black salve has no scientifically valid benefits and can actually cause great harm to the skin, such as burning and scarring, not to mention the detriment caused to the body by not treating cancers with legitimate medicine.
