This bottle would have held a liquid called "Hostetters Celebrated Stomach Bitters." This medicine was sold as "a positive protective against the fatal maladies of the Southern swamps, and the poisonous tendency of the impure rivers and bayous." Hostetters added some aromatic oils and vegetable bitters to give the liquid a medicine-like taste.
